The Davis Mountains are the Texas sky islands cool green volcanic peaks rising above the Chihuahuan Desert. Fort Davis is a beautifully preserved 1850s frontier army post. And nearby McDonald Observatory hosts the largest telescope in Texas and the best public star parties in the state. Marfa is 30 minutes away with its famous Marfa Lights and Dynamo art scene. This is the cool mountain stop between Big Bend and the drive east.
